When we arrived in Skopje, North Macedonia we had no idea what to expect, or what to do… but we quickly realized we would not run out of options anytime soon! Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or just an adventurer looking for a good time, there’s something here for you. Skopje is a city with a rich blend of history, culture, and modernity. So, let’s dive into the top things to do in this dynamic city!
THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN SKOPJE
1. Cross the Stone Bridge
This 15th-century marvel connects the old and new parts of the city and offers breathtaking views of the Vardar River and the majestic Kale Fortress, though it is just one of many incredible bridges that connect the two sides of Skopje.
2. People Watch Along the Downtown Promenade
Take a leisurely walk along the downtown promenade on the Vardar River. It’s the perfect place to soak in the local culture and do some people-watching. You’ll find numerous bars, restaurants, pirate ship(?!), and shops to explore. The architecture here is a blend of old and new, which makes it a unique experience.
3. Walk the Walls of the Kale Fortress
Located on a hill, Kale Fortress is believed to be over 1000 years old, and is completely free to enter and explore! Wander its ancient walls, soak in the panoramic views, and imagine the city’s past. It’s especially magical during sunset, as long as the sunset happens before 7pm which is when the gates close for the night (The fortress is open between 9am and 7pm).
4. Kayak in Matka Canyon
Take a short trip to Matka Canyon (you can easily get there by public bus or by a half-day tour) for a day of outdoor adventures. You can kayak or boat around on the gorgeous waters, eat in the nearby restaurant, and hike along the canyon. It’s a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
5. Stroll Through Macedonia Square
This bustling pedestrian street is the heart of Skopje’s modern life. Explore the shops, cafes, and restaurants, and take in the lively atmosphere. You will appreciate the impressive buildings and statues in every direction.
6. Check Out Skopje’s Art Scene
The city is adorned with an array of statues and sculptures. Admire the controversial and enormous “Warrior on a Horse” Statue (Greece has a problem with N. Macedonia claiming Alexander the Great as their own, who it is said to depict), the Philip II Monument, or the nearby “Fountain of the Mothers of Macedonia”, there are so many works of art throughout the city that you’ll stumble upon, so make a day out of finding your favourites.
7. Discover the Old Bazaar
Step back in time in Skopje’s Old Bazaar, one of the best-preserved in the Balkans. It’s a maze of cobblestone streets, teahouses, antique shops, and local crafts. Stop in for a bite to eat, or haggle with a shop owner to get a good price on a new treasure.
8. Cross the Art Bridge
The Art Bridge is a pedestrian bridge situated over the Vardar River in the heart of Skopje, adorned with numerous statues paying homage to renowned Macedonian artists and musicians.
9. Taste Traditional Macedonian Cuisine
Indulge in the flavors of Skopje with local dishes like kebabs, grilled meats, and ajvar (a roasted red pepper and eggplant spread). The food here is delicious, and it won’t break the bank!
10. Learn New Words
North Macedonia uses the Cyrillic alphabet so it may look intimidating, but the locals will love it if you try your hand at a phrase or word. Here’s one: to say ‘thank you’, you’d say ‘blagodaram’ (Благодарам), pronounced ‘blah-go-dah-rahm’.
11. Relax in City Park
If you need a breather from the city, head to City Park. Stroll, have a picnic, or simply sit by the river and watch the world go by on one of the benches.
12. Ride a Cable Car or Hike up Vodno Mountain
Get panoramic views of the city from the top of Vodno Mountain. You can either hike up, or drive to the half-way point of the mountain and then take the cable-car the rest of the way. If you’d rather get more exercise, you can hike the whole way too!
13. See the Mustafa Pasha Mosque
This beautifully preserved mosque showcases Ottoman architecture and is a peaceful spot to stop by.
14. Evening Entertainment
As the sun sets, Skopje comes alive with a vibrant nightlife scene. Explore the many bars, clubs, and live music venues for a fun evening out. Check local listings for any concerts or events happening during your visit.
15. Visit A Museum:
Skopje is home to many interesting museums, so pick the one(s) that interest you, and dive into the history, art, and culture of the area. Some great options are:

The town of Ohrid is over two thousand years old and has many ancient churches, monasteries, and the Ohrid Fortress to explore. Visit Ohrid by tour, private car, or, like us, you can make that your next destination in the Balkans and take a bus!
