5 AMAZING THINGS TO DO IN LAKE OHRID, NORTH MACEDONIA

Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest and most beautiful lakes in Europe, located on the border between North Macedonia and Albania. It is known for its exceptional natural and cultural significance, as well as its stunning scenery. We stopped through the town of Ohrid in North Macedonia on our way to Albania, and were charmed by the cute town. Although we only stayed for 1 day, we wish we could’ve extended for longer.

HOW TO GET THERE

Lake Ohrid is one of the transfer points for trips between Skopje and Southern Albania. From Skopje, there are multiple bus companies that run multiple routes per day. The journey takes around 3 to 4 hours.

We booked our tickets online with Makedonija Soobrakaj, and they cost 14 USD/person. The buses depart from Skopje Bus Station, and arrive at the main town of Ohrid.

The main town of Ohrid on the North Macedonian side of the border is teeming with things to do.

EXPLORE THE LAKE

Lake Ohrid is one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes. You can swim, take boat rides, or zip around doing water sports in its crystal-clear waters.

One big attraction is the beautiful St. Naum Monastery at the southern end of the lake. There are many boat tours, such as this one, that take you on a lake tour starting in the town of Ohrid and going to the St. Naum Monastery.

EXPLORE OLD TOWN

The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, cobblestone streets, and Byzantine churches.

Some notable sites include the Church of St. Sophia, the Ancient Theatre of Ohrid, and the Church of St. John at Kaneo for panoramic views of the lake.

The Old Bazaar in Ohrid is also a great place to shop for souvenirs, traditional crafts, and handmade jewelry.

OHRID FORTRESS

Believed to have been initially constructed during the reign of the Roman Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century, the Ohrid Fortress has undergone multiple expansions and modifications throughout its existence. You can explore the historic Ohrid Fortress and see its impressive walls, towers, and archaeological remains. It offers panoramic views of the lake and the town.

ANCIENT MONUMENTS & CHURCHES

Ohrid is often referred to as the “Jerusalem of the Balkans” due to its numerous churches. Don’t miss the Church of St. Clement and St. Panteleimon, both UNESCO-listed sites.

TRY SOME MACEDONIAN CUISINE

Ohrid is filled with cute little bars and restaurants, and you can try dishes like Tavče Gravče (bean stew), Ajvar (pepper-based condiment), and fresh fish from the lake.

Ohrid is a charming little town in North Macedonia that combines history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you’re just doing a day trip from Skopje or stopping over on your way to Albania, it’s definitely worth a visit!
