Bacalar, Mexico is known for its stunning lagoon, often called the “Lagoon of Seven Colors.” Although some of the waterfront is taken up by more expensive beach clubs and hotels, there are plenty of amazing lagoon access points for free or for cheap. Here are a few options for enjoying the lagoon at a minimal cost or for free:
PUBLIC ACCESS POINTS
There are public areas along the shore of the lagoon that are free to access. You can simply find a spot, set up a blanket, and enjoy the view.
We enjoyed an evening here, at this free public pier located right next to Bacalar Ecoparque.
Another FREE municipal pier is located between Calle 12 & 14, at this location.
BACALAR BOARDWALK
Located right next to the free pier in Bacalar Ecoparque, the Boardwalk in Bacalar is a public boardwalk along the lagoon with benches and open spaces. You can take a leisurely stroll, relax, and enjoy the views for only 20 MXN ($1USD) per person!
CENOTE AZUL
Cenote Azul is a freshwater cenote near Bacalar that is considered part of the same ecosystem. The cenote is quite deep, with the central sinkhole area reaching depths of over 90 meters (about 295 feet). There are many ways you can spend the day at Cenote Azul, including swimming, picnic-ing, snorkelling, and sunbathing.
Entry fee into Cenote Azul is is 140 MXN ($8 USD) for adults and 80 MXN pesos for children ages 4 to 8.
LOS RAPIDOS PARK
Los Rapidos Park is situated along the lagoon’s edge and is absolutely gorgeous! It’s one of the main attractions of the magical town of Bacalar, and are surrounded by enormous stromatolites and mangroves. You can rent kayaks and traverse the entire channel, or jump into the water and let yourself be carried down by the current.
The most expensive option on the list, entrance to Los Rapidos costs 200 MXN ($11 USD) per person, and there is a restaurant, bar, and chairs inside to relax and enjoy the day.

Bacalar is an absolutely magical hidden gem and although more and more of the town is getting privatised, there are still amazing budget spots to enjoy the lagoon. It will truly blow you away!
