THE ULTIMATE ADVENTURE: HIKING AND KAYAKING IN MATKA CANYON

Matka Canyon is a stunning natural gem located near Skopje, North Macedonia. The canyon reminded us of a mini Ha Long Bay, with its picturesque landscape of towering cliffs and green blue waters. If you’re visiting Skopje, here’s everything you need to know about doing a day trip to Matka Canyon:

HOW TO GET THERE

The most budget friendly way to get to Matka Canyon is by taking the local bus #60. The bus departs from Skopje Bus Station, and costs 120 denars for a SHOPSKA card bus pass, which covers your fare both ways.

The bus runs everyday to Matka Canyon, following this schedule:

When you arrive at the Skopje Bus Station, find the office selling the SHOPSKA bus passes, which looks like an abandoned bus, and purchase your ticket.

Then, look for the sign for bus number 60.

The bus ride takes approximately 30-45 minutes, depending on traffic. Enjoy the scenic views as you leave the city behind and approach the canyon.

We took the 8:45 am bus and arrived at the canyon before most tourists. The bus dropped us off right in the parking lot, and we were able to walk straight into the canyon.

It’s important to note that when you’re trying to return to Skopje, the bus doesn’t necessarily pick you up from the same spot that it drops you off at. This is because when the parking lot gets full, the bus is unable to turn around. Therefore, the driver will park way further up the road. We had to walk around half a mile up the road to board the bus to take us back to Skopje!

If you’d rather do an organised tour, you can book this tour with GetYourGuide for 30 USD/person, and they will organise transportation to and from the city.

THINGS TO DO

The bus will drop you off near the entrance to Matka Canyon. There is no fee to enter the area, and you can follow the well-marked path to the canyon area.

WALKING TRAILS

Matka Canyon offers various walking trails that lead to attractions like Vrelo Cave, churches, and different viewpoints. The trails are well-maintained and fairly flat, so it’s not too difficult to hike.

RENTING KAYAKS

One of the best things to do at Matka Canyon is renting kayaks to explore the beautiful green blue waters! There are a few little rental shops right at the entrance of the canyon, that offer various options such as a single person kayak, double kayak, or water bikes. The rentals are charged by the hour and you can stay out there as long as you want!

The rental prices are listed below:

Kayaking routes vary in length and difficulty, but you can choose to stay close to the rental shop if you don’t feel comfortable rowing too far. A popular route include paddling to Vrelo Cave and exploring the wider lake area, but this takes around 2 hours one way!

BOAT TOURS

The easiest and fastest way to visit Vrelo Cave is to join a boat trip! These cost 4 euros/person and take you on a little motorboat ride through the canyon. If you don’t feel comfortable kayaking, this could be a good option!

SWIMMING

You can also swim in the canyon, but the water is FREEZING!

IMMERSE IN NATURE

Matka Canyon is home to diverse plant species and is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Keep an eye out for herons, eagles, and other wildlife.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW

  • Wearing a life jacket is required at all times while kayaking in the canyon
  • Make sure you pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun’s rays while on the water.
  • There is 1 restaurant and a few food/drink vendors at the canyon, but the prices are fairly marked up. Bring your own water bottle and pack a lunch & snacks to stay hydrated and energised during your kayaking adventure. We packed sandwiches and snacks and had a little picnic on the water!

A visit to Matka Canyon is an amazing way to get out of the city and experience some natural beauty and adventure. Enjoy the tranquility, paddle through the calm waters, and create fun memories of your North Macedonian adventure!
