HISTORY
Skopje Fortress, also known as Kale Fortress, is a centuries-old structure that has stood the test of time! It dates back to Roman times and has been a witness to various civilisations, including the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire. Its strategic location aided defence, and it played an important role in various empires’ control of the region. After losing its military significance, the fortress was damaged in a 1963 earthquake. Restoration efforts followed, and today, it stands as a prominent cultural and tourist site, and as a symbol of Skopje’s diverse history over centuries.

Skopje Fortress is conveniently located near the city centre, making it easily accessible by foot. Begin your journey from Macedonia Square or the Stone Bridge and follow the signs leading to the fortress.

Entry to Kale Fortress is completely free of charge, and it’s open from 9 am to 7 pm everyday. The entrance point is here.
