One of the best vantage points of the incredible Ionian Sea is at a charming little village called Lakones, nestled on the side of the mountain. This village can be accessed on foot, via the Paleokastritsa-Lakones-Arakli Peak trail. Located in the captivating region of Paleokastritsa on the Greek island of Corfu, this hike offers picturesque trails, breathtaking vistas, and the opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural wonders that await at every turn.
The journey begins in the coastal village of Paleokastritsa, renowned for its stunning waters and cliffs. The trailhead is here. Ascend the well marked trail from the village, and immediately feel enveloped in the beauty of the island’s landscape.
The ascent to Lakones village is on a rocky path that leads you above the tree line. It is moderately steep, with the 4 mile hike covering over 1600 vertical feet. Along the way, the beautiful Ionian Sea creates a striking contrast with the lush greenery that surrounds the trail. The panoramic views continuously get better and better the higher you go!
Upon arriving in Lakones, you’ll be greeted by a charming village with its whitewashed houses, cobblestone streets, and vibrant flowers. There are little bars and restaurants with beautiful vistas, so you can reward yourself by savouring some authentic Greek cuisine in cozy tavernas.
If you still have gas in the tank, you can depart from Lakones village towards the majestic Arakli Peak. The trail winds its way through the forests at a fairly steep incline. Reaching the summit of Arakli Peak, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama. The stunning coastline, turquoise waters of Paleokastritsa Bay, and the green hills make the steep hike all worth it!
The descent from Arakli Peak back down towards Paleokastritsa is a well marked path, sometimes stair, sometimes gravel. With the ocean ahead, you always know you’re headed in the right direction!

THINGS TO NOTE
- Make sure you wear good hiking shoes and long socks, as there are many little burrs that stick to your shoes and socks!
- Bring LOTS of water! There isn’t much shade in some parts of the hike and it gets hot!
- Bring some cash if you want to stop at the local tavernas up in Lakones Village!
