Porto is an amazing city that beautifully combines old-world charm with a modern vibe, and our Porto walking guide will help you navigate its streets to uncover its most iconic landmarks and lesser-known treasures.

RIBERIA DISTRICT

Start your walking tour in the Ribeira district, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Nestled along the scenic banks of the Douro River, this UNESCO World Heritage Site invites you to step into a world of charm, vibrant colors, and bustling energy.

As you wander through the narrow, cobbled streets of Ribeira, you’ll be enchanted by the colorful facades of the buildings, each telling its own story. You will enjoy the picturesque views of the Douro River. Visit the iconic Ribeira Square (Praça da Ribeira) and take in the lively atmosphere.

DOM LUIS I BRIDGE

Cross the Dom Luís I Bridge, an architectural marvel and one of Porto’s most recognizable landmarks. Spanning the majestic Douro River, the Dom Luís I Bridge is an impressive double-decker iron bridge, named after King Luís I of Portugal, and connects the vibrant Ribeira district with the neighboring city of Vila Nova de Gaia.

From the upper deck, you’ll have panoramic views of the city, the river, and the neighboring Vila Nova de Gaia.

VILA NOVA DE GAIA

Explore Vila Nova de Gaia, a charming village just across the Douro River from Porto  that perfectly complements the charm and allure of its neighboring city. Known for its historic Port wine cellars, scenic riverside views, and lively bustling atmosphere, wandering the streets of Vila Nova de Gaia is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

This is where the famous Port wine cellars are located. Visit one of the wine lodges for a tour and tasting to learn about the history and production of Port wine.

CRYSTAL PALACE GARDENS

Nestled high above Porto, the Crystal Palace Gardens offer a tranquil oasis from the city. These gardens, located in the western part of Porto, offer a stunning viewpoint that offers panoramic vistas of Porto’s skyline. From this elevated vantage point, you can admire the picturesque Douro River, the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, and the city’s colourful rooftops spread out before you.

The Clérigos Tower stands tall as a symbol of Porto’s skyline. You can climb its spiral staircase to reach the top and witness breathtaking panoramic views of the city. From this vantage point, you can take in the historic neighborhoods, the meandering Douro River, and the vibrant energy of Porto.

Nearby, you’ll find the enchanting Livraria Lello Bookstore. Its Neo-Gothic design captivates with intricate details and vibrant stained glass windows. Inside, the bookstore’s elegant wooden staircase, believed to have inspired J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, adds a touch of magic to the atmosphere.

SAO BENTO STATION AND PORTO CATHEDRAL

Make your way to São Bento Station, a stunning train station. Its elegant interior is adorned with stunning azulejo tiles, depicting significant moments from Portuguese history.

From there, continue to Porto Cathedral (Sé Cathedral), a Romanesque masterpiece that dates back to the 12th century. Explore its interior and enjoy the panoramic views from the terrace.

BOLHAO MARKET AND SANTA CATARINA STREET

Visit Mercado do Bolhão, a traditional market where you can find a variety of fresh produce, local products, and crafts. Then, stroll down Santa Catarina Street, one of Porto’s main shopping streets. Enjoy the bustling atmosphere, shop for souvenirs, and try some local snacks.

BONUS: FOZ DO DOURO BEACH

If you have an extra few days in Porto, head to Foz do Douro, where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the promenade, take in the ocean views, and relax on the beach.

Remember to wear comfortable shoes and carry a map or use a navigation app to guide you through the city. Porto’s streets can be steep and hilly in some areas, so be prepared for some uphill walking.
