HISTORY OF THE KAYMAKLI UNDERGROUND CITY

The city holds immense historical significance as one of the most extensive and well-preserved underground cities in Cappadocia. It dates back to the Hittite period (approximately 2000 BCE) and was expanded and used by various civilizations over the centuries, including early Christians who sought refuge here during times of persecution.

The underground city is believed to have once accommodated around 3,500 people, including families, livestock, and storage areas for food and water.

Impressively, the nearby underground city of Derinkuyu was once home to 20,000 people, and stretches 280 feet below the Earth’s surface. The two cities were once connected via miles of tunnels.

You can also visit Derinkuyu, but Kaymakli is considered by many to be a better choice as it is less crowded and one of the most well-preserved underground cities in Cappadocia.

It is highly recommended to explore Kaymakli with a guided tour.

  • Choose sturdy and slip-resistant footwear suitable for walking on uneven and sometimes damp surfaces.
  • Bring a light jacket or sweater, as the underground city can be cooler than the surface, especially during hot summer months.
