GUIDED TOURS

Some carpet factories offer guided tours of their facilities, where you can learn about the intricate process of carpet making. These tours can be enlightening, providing insights into the artistry and craftsmanship behind each carpet.

We took a guided tour of the Bazaar 54 Carpet Factory in Anatolia, and learned so much!

INTRO TO CARPET MAKING

Upon arriving at the carpet factory, we were greeted by a guide who took us on a guided tour of the premises.

Our guide introduced the carpet weaving process. We learned about the materials used in different carpets, such as wool, silk, and cotton. In Turkey, the material most commonly used is sheep’s wool because the Anatolian plateaus are excellent grazing land for sheep and good grazing land determines the sheen and strength of the wool.

We also got to see the difference between hand woven carpets and machine made carpets. As he walked us through the factory, he introduced us to different techniques used to create the beautiful pieces. We also got to witness the skilled artisans at work, creating carpets using traditional techniques.

DESIGNS AND MOTIFS

Our guide explained the significance of different carpet designs and patterns. Turkish carpets often incorporate intricate motifs and symbols, each with its own cultural and historical background.

Some of the most popular motifs in Turkish carpets include:

Yıldız (The Star): The star motif, though it generally symbolises happiness, can represent the womb, and it may represent fertility as well.

Nazar (The Evil Eye): The weavers have always believed some people possess a power in their glance which can cause harm, injury, misfortune, and even death. At immediate risk are babies, pets, important objects in the home, and property. The Muska is a triangular package containing a sacred verse carried by the tribal people for protection. When woven into a rug, it serves as an amulet, conferring protection by its presence.

Tree of Life: The tree of life motif symbolizes the desire for immortality. It can also mean the afterlife. This motif is the worldwide symbol of life rising up to heaven and it encompasses both earth and heaven.

THE SHOW ROOM

At the end of the tour, we were taken to the showroom and provided complimentary tea, coffee, red wine or white wine. The salesmen displayed a wide array of carpets ranging in size, colour, price, and material. The salesmen were incredibly knowledgable and helpful, so if you provide them a budget and a size that you’re looking for, they will provide many options for you to look through!

BUYING A CARPET & QUALITY CONTROL

If you’re interested in purchasing a Turkish carpet, the staff will explain the different features of the carpets and help you find one that suits your preferences and budget.

Authentic Turkish carpets are renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship, unique designs, and high-quality materials. However, due to their popularity and demand, there can be varying levels of authenticity and quality in the market. Some factors to consider when assessing the authenticity and quality of Turkish carpets include:

Origin: Authentic Turkish carpets are handwoven in Turkey, particularly in regions with a rich history of carpet making, such as Anatolia. Look for carpets labeled as “Turkish” or specifying the region where they were made.

Materials: Traditional Turkish carpets are made from natural fibres like wool, silk, or a combination of both. High-quality carpets use locally sourced, natural materials that are carefully selected for durability and beauty.

Handmade vs. Machine-made: Authentic Turkish carpets are handwoven using traditional techniques passed down through generations. Machine-made carpets, on the other hand, are mass-produced and lack the craftsmanship and uniqueness of handmade pieces.

Knot Density: Knot density refers to the number of knots per square inch. Higher knot density generally indicates a finer and more intricate carpet, which often correlates with better quality and craftsmanship.

Design and Motifs: Authentic Turkish carpets feature traditional motifs and designs that hold cultural and historical significance. Look for intricate and well-executed patterns, which are a hallmark of genuine Turkish carpets.

Labelling and Certification: Look for reputable sellers who provide information about the carpet’s origin, materials, and production process. Some carpets may come with certificates of authenticity or quality to verify their genuineness.

BARGAINING

If you decide to buy one, keep in mind that bargaining is common in Turkish culture, especially in markets and carpet shops. Feel free to negotiate the price with the salesmen, and try to get them to throw in concessions such as free shipping or bigger discounts.

If you plan to buy a large carpet or multiple pieces, many factories can provide international shipping options back to your home country to ensure your purchase reaches your home safely. Depending on the size of your carpet, the factory could also provide you a free suitcase to help you transport your new purchase home.
